It’s a stock quote but a good one, “You see things; and you say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say, “Why not?”

George Bernard Shaw wrote it in “Back to Methuselah”. Robert Kennedy brought it into the popular consciousness a little more heartily a few decades later before he was shot while living out his dream to be President.

Generally, I’m opposed to the attempt to divide all people into two groups (my favoirte riff off the idiocy of those assertions is, “There are three kinds of people in the world, those who can count and those who can’t.”)

But I believe Shaw. It’s simple. It works. It’s true.

But I also know that living the “why not” way is a bit more tricky than just parroting a quote.

Here’s a six pack of people who said “why not”. I admire each of them.

1) Man sets a new world record for putting on the most t-shirts ever:

2) A man from Britain got in his car one day and decided to go for a drive. No plan. No destination. A few months and dozens of countries later, he’s still driving. Article here (or here in .pdf if that link is dead).

3) Did someone say impromptu dance off? These guys have no qualms about embarrassing themselves for a laugh. Funniest stuff starts building after the one minute mark:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

4) A little while ago JetBlue announced the limited sale of an unlimited flight pass ($599 for any number of flights anywhere in the U.S. all month). Some people thought it would flop. A lot thought it was a good value and snapped them up.

Then there are these guys who thought, “Hey, how about we get passes and fly every where all month, not stopping in any one city for longer that 12 hours?”

So they did just that. They’ve been on the road (or in the air for a while now). Check in on their journey out here.

5) The Where-the-hell-is-Matt guy. He’s been a hero of mine for a while now. Matt’s story is the story of a guy who doesn’t really like his job, hasn’t really seen much of the world so he just quits and goes to every country he can before the money runs out.

Some thought it was awesome. Some thought it was stupid. No one (not even Matt) thought that he’d get sponsored and be able to travel around the world for years.

Everyone’s probably seen the vidoes but they are classics and always make for the happy. Original video. 2nd video. Latest video:

6) I’m putting Ernest Wilkins last – not because he’s doing the most amazing thing – but because he’s doing it today.  Ernest probably woke up just a couple hours ago.  Or maybe he couldn’t sleep at all because he was too excited. Today Earnest is recreating and living “Ferris Bueler’s Day Off” in its entirety. More here.

Why not?

Letting the t.v. raise your kids might not be a bad thing. This dude got a mad education from MTV.
